Can I use sand to represent Earth in a Wiccan ritual?

In many books about Wiccan rituals it mentions using natural salt to symbolise earth in rituals involving the Elements.
I find natural salt hard to find and not in my area, so I am wondering if I could use sand in my rituals.

I have very liberal and eclectic beliefs so I don't see problems, just want to know others opinions on this.

You can use sand, soil, rocks, plants, etc to represent earth. Don't follow books as though they were "gospel" truth and MUST not be altered or substituted. The key is to follow your intuition. What does earth represent to YOU. Does it include sand? potting mix? rocks and stones in a particular pattern? Each book you read is more or less based on the authors OPINION. Form Your Own using theirs as a base pattern, if you like, and go from there.

What elements do tarot cards represent?

I'm asking about your opinion on the swords vs. staves/wands. I have seen both being assigned to fire and air interchangeably. I can't decide which way gives more sense. I understand that air - wands/fire-swords is newer, but the traditional is not always right especially if we put some development in the equation. For me, it all comes down on whether we think of a staff as a magic staff or as a primitive weapon.

What is your opinion?

Rods are fire - they are creative sparks
Swords are Air - they are mental
Cups are Water - they are emotions
Pentacles are Earth - they are practical
