Temple of Heaven – A Historical Site
Located in Beijing, the Temple of Heaven is China's largest compound of ancient buildings existent today. Regarded three times larger than Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven sprawls across a land of over 273 hectares. Established in 1420, the construction of the Temple of Heaven was initiated with the thought of creating a sacred site to pray to Heaven. Surrounded by a number of buildings including Circular Mound Altar and Imperial Vault of Heaven, the Temple of Heaven is one of the most visited attractions in Beijing.
The Temple of Heaven was famously visited by a number of emperors during the Qing and Ming dynasties, especially in times of annual ceremonies where prayers were given to Heaven for a fruitful harvest. Although it is more popularly known as a complex of Taoist buildings, Chinese Heaven Worship was founded during the imperial times, which predated the time Taoism existed.
The most significant building is the Altar of Prayer for Good Harvest, which is built in marble stones. The building was placed on a circular foundation and has three levels. This structure stands at height of 38 metres and a diameter of 30 metres. The temple has a glaze-tile roof, which is cone-shaped. The roof is coloured in blue and is capped with a knob that is gilded. One of the main highlights is the towering triple-eave hall. The Echo Hall is a circular wall of polished bricks which surrounds the Imperial Vault of Heaven. Located nearby is the Circular Mount Altar, known as the place where emperors usually worshipped heaven. The Centre of the Heaven Stone lies at the centre of the temple, which is essentially a circular stone where visitors usually come to pray openly.
Lying to the north of the compound is the Prayer of Good Harvest, which is an impressive hall. This three-tiered wooden structure is placed on a tri-level marble plinth, rebuilt after the fire in 1889. Magnificently decorated, the interior contains a massive ceremonial throne.
