Art Nouveau Architectural Style - An Overview
Art Nouveau (“New Art”) is an architectural style that became extremely popular in the early 20th century. Art Nouveau features organic and floral motifs and stylized curvilinear forms. The basic concept is bringing art into everyday settings. Although Art Nouveau was first used in Europe it soon spread to the rest of the world and began showing up everywhere from architecture to furniture.
The Art Nouveau style was a reaction against the rigid and formal styles found in the 18th century. Many buildings were built in this style and feature arches, stained glass, Japanese motifs and asymmetrical shapes. It is ironic that although Art Nouveau emphasizes nature and natural forms it was an urban city trend. It was especially popular in Paris and art nouveau influences can still be seen today.
In the United States Art Nouveau was popular in larger cities like New York and Chicago. An example is the glasswork of Louis Comfort Tiffany who created beautiful glass designs featuring flowers, plants and insects in stylized patterns. Art Nouveau remained popular in the United States and Europe until the outbreak of the first World War. Although Art Nouveau went out of style the concept of creating aesthetically beautiful buildings using natural themes has remained.
