How to Select the Correct PMC for your Handmade Jewellery
Precious metal clay (PMC) is a versatile clay that when fired becomes fine silver, allowing the creation of exquisite handmade jewellery to be realised without the need for expensive tools. As PMC has become more popular it has evolved and is now available in a number of different forms, PMC original, PMC +, and PMC3, each possessing its own properties for working. In this article we take a brief look at the working properties of all three, so that one might make an informed decision when purchasing PMC for your next handmade jewellery project.
1. PMC Original
Consists of approx 74% fine silver, 26% water and binder
Most economical of the PMC types
Possess the best working properties in the clay stage, as PMC original is tougher when dried, allowing it to be carved and engraved with ease.
Must be fired at 900 degrees Celsius for 2 hours and therefore requires kiln firing
Firing results in shrinkage of 28%, which could be used to advantage, for example obtaining fine detail in a small charm
Only available in clay form
May be weaker as it produces a slightly more porous end product
2. PMC +
Consists of approx 90% fine silver, 10% water and binder
More expensive than original
Drying time is quicker in the clay stage compared to original
Possess shorter firing times; 900 degrees Celsius for 10 mins.
Can be fired at lower temperatures, therefore one can integrate glass pieces into a design and fire together.
The reduction in the amount of binder, and the increased uniformity of the silver particles in PMC+ results in a stronger end product than PMC original
Available as clay; sheet; paste; syringe
3. PMC3
Consists of approx 90% fine silver, 10% water and binder
Most expensive of the silver PMCs
Also dries quickly in the clay stage, and can be sticky so tools and hands require good lubrication
Can be torch fired, so no need to invest in a kiln
Can be fired at even lower temperatures allowing the inclusion of some natural gemstones
Despite lower firing temperatures PMC3 remains as dense and as strong as PMC+
The lower firing schedule allows sterling silver elements to be incorporated into the design without the need for soldering.
