The Nicolaitans - Who Were They?
Saul of Tarsus, a Roman ranking soldier, who later became the apostle Paul, was one of the fiercest persecutors of the church of Christ and Christianity in its infancy. A miraculous encounter with our Lord Jesus Christ in the road to Damascus, had made Saul a convert to Christianity and began his Christian mission with great zeal. When he set foot in Ephesus, once a flourishing province of Asia Minor, he discovered some converts to Christianity but had not yet received the Holy Spirit. In Acts 19:1-7, it read:
1 While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus. There he found some disciples 2 and asked them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when[a] you believed?"
They answered, "No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit."
3 So Paul asked, "Then what baptism did you receive?"
"John's baptism," they replied.
4 Paul said, "John's baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus." 5 On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues[b] and prophesied. 7 There were about twelve men in all.
Alongside with this development, paganism, brought along by the Romans by their conquest, was even more flourishing in Ephesus. In fact, the city's major commerce and industry was the selling of idols to pilgrims who came from all parts of the world to pay homage to such popular pagan goddesses as Artemis or Diana in their temples.
Added to this, the idol makers made miniature replicas of these goddesses which can be carried to and from their respective places in the belief that it can ward evil spirits and misfortunes and attract beautiful women and good fortunes. The image of Artemis or Diana is believed to promote fertility and charm and is very popular with childless customers with fertility problems, and people with love problems and/or romantic/sexual problems with women..
Added to this, archeological findings dig ups include the Ephesian Letters which contained writings about magic, sorcery, mysticism, incantations, divinations, and other popular pagan practices to invoke power and material advantages. This is not to be confused with Paul's Letters to the Ephesians which contained writings from the apostle for the spiritual benefit and well being of the Ephesians.
The practices cited above added the many other pagan customs and traditions that had made its way into the church at Ephesus, mixed true God worship of the apostles and the false pagan practices of old and new church members. These church members were called by our Lord Jesus Christ as the Nicolaitans.
The Nicolaitans therefore has the following identifications:
1. Belief and practice of idol worship to pagan gods and goddesses. Idolatry is abomination in the eyes of God (Exodus 20:3-6)
2. Belief and practice of magic, sorcery, divination, mysticism, incantations, charms, and other pagan practices to acquire power and advantage.
Do the church in which you belong believed and practice these things? If the answer is yes, then its time to think again. Jesus has this to say:
If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place. Rev. 2:4.
Likewise, this is another mark of a false church.
