Sightseeing at the Giza Pyramids
Probably the most well-known tourist destination on Earth, and probably the world's oldest, The Great Pyramids of Giza are the single remaining wonder of the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World. Visitors have been in awe of their architectural ingenuity for millennia.
The pyramids are around 5000 years old, and until the 19th century remained the tallest structures in the world. We're not sure for certain how ancient people were successful at constructing such advanced structures, since we normally assume them to be less advanced than ourselves. The highest of the 3 Great Pyramids is Khufu, which stands 138.8 m tall (455 feet). It actually used to be taller, as it was originally constructed to be 146.6 meters tall (480.97 ft), but as a result of erosion the disappearance of the pyamidion, a cap made of tone that was gold plated. The second tallest pyramid is Khafre, which measures in at 143.5 m (470.5 ft). Khafre is often thought to be taller than Khufu because it rests on a 10 meter high bedrock that makes it rise slightly higher than its taller sibling. The smallest of the Great Pyramids is Mankaure, with a height of 61 m (204 ft). Originally its height was 65.5 m (218 feet).
The "Sphinx" is another stunning sight to behold, specifically when it's viewed on an angle with the pyramids behind it. It is a lion-human combination that contains symbols for royalty and power. It is another example of genius construction, being carved entirely out of a single piece of bedrock. There are many such colossal figures in Egypt, but this is the oldest example of one.
One of the reasons for the erosion of the pyramids over the centuries was that the structures would regularly be robbed of their stones in order to build the buildings in Cairo. This activity didn't cease until the 1800s', and lots of the stolen stones still exist in buildings in Cairo today. It's difficult to judge how the pyramids must have looked like when they were first built, but judging by their amazing stature as mere relics, we can easily conclude that they must have been impressive.
