Ai Yai Ya Yai - A ritual that works to reduce unnecessary pain and unnecessary suffering
While cycling with my daughter, I fell off my bicycle and was hurt. It was painful and bleeding. I used the ritual that we are teaching "Ai Yai Ya Yai" and sang out loud the chores of the Mexican song Cielito Lindo.
(http://positivecultures.ning.com/video/enrique-iglesias-luciano) to the amazement (and amusement) of the helpful people in East Coast Park in Singapore.
You can see the excitement on my face and sheer happiness when I tested once again on myself that our EDtS Ritual "recipes" really work.
Have you seen a parent distracting their kid's attention to a balloon or a lollipop and suddenly much of the pain evaporates? A soccer player keep on playing despite being hurt and the pain come after?
Is it a successful lying strategy? We all consciously and unconsciously control our brain for every activity, thought, emotion or sensation we experience. We have a CHOICE.
Not only "Pain is inevitable, Suffering is" , also a significant part of pain is optional.
Is it a lie that works? Or is it a scientific fact that we are not aware of?
When we feel a physical pain, the brain reacts with physical stimulus and our emotional and cognitive parts as well. It rushes the signals via the nerve system to send out the healing agents to the affected area. Our choice of emotions and thoughts either multiplies the amount of signals (without getting much more of the healing benefits) or if we use distraction techniques, we change the thoughts and the chemical release to reduce pain and enhance healing. The same applies also for an emotional pain and our mood.
Our conscious mind has a capacity of only 40 byte while the other parts of the brain can handle around 11 billion. Only one thought can be dominant at a time. What will it be? What we choose to think will produce different hormones in our brain. A choice of happy thoughts in the eye of pain and adversities adjusts our brain so we can rise above the aches and bad circumstances. At the worst of time, we need to be able to release the pain and find rituals to give us the strength to bounce back to faster recovery.
A study with special software and fMri that attempted to study whether it's possible to train the brain to reduce pain was conducted at Stanford University. The results were exciting, Participants could observe the images of the "rostral anterior cingulate cortex," which is the area of the brain that is responsible for processing pain. Shifting the mind from the pain, resulted with lower activity in that part!
Focusing on the pain, the discomfort, the red blood spilled, replays the bad events and results with release of more stress hormones Cortisol and Adrenaline which in excess lowers our immune system effectiveness. Laughing , singing, or at least smiling sends a calming message to the brain. "It is not as bad" and allow your brain to focus on a much more important task: Find a solution to minimize the pain.
In my case - it was to use the cold water bottle to press on my hand, to rush to put an antiseptic solution, and the most important thing was to give a signal to my daughter, that an optimistic mindset will help her in tougher times.
