"WITCHCRAFT - A NEW MUSICAL" : IF ALL THE NEW MUSICALS COULD MIX INNOVATION AND HISTORY THIS WAY
Witches are often portaited as bad, ugly women who fly around on a broom stick with a black hat on their heads and maybe some savage animal - such as a black cat or a crow - as best friends. "Witchcraft - a new musical" surprising from the beginning when audience realizes that witches are not wicked women to be afraid of that, anyway, live just in the fantasy world but are real women, with strenghts and weaknesses as all the human beings. The reconstruction of Salem Village in 1692 and the way people lived back then surely help the audience to straight connect to the musical and to the time in which the story is set. Taking inspiration from a true story - the witchhunt of Salem Village - the musical introduces some new, starting from the leading ladies, played by the awesome Belle Renaldi ( Rhoslyn ) and Selvaggia Renaldi ( Valisa ), better known as the pop duo Cherry Babes: Rhoslyn and Valisa are two sisters, the first is naive and sweet and the second is the older and stronger, they are witches, but during their daily life they struggle to survive in a land that has known only poverty for many years. When the daughter and niece of Reverend Parris start to behave in an odd way and the famous doctor Griggs states that the children are demonized and victims of witchcraft, the already hard lives of the sisters change forever: they and their coven of witches start to be afraid of everyone since the magistrate start to throw innocent women in jail. The little demonized girls go in the whole village and point out to women, calling them witches, and this is enough for the adults to bring those women to jail. Meanwhile, Rhoslyn falls in love with the young magistrate Jonathan Corwin, who is forced to be a magistrate but hates that job and thinks to himself as " a puppet in the hands of his boss", the Magistrate Hathorne, who badly hates witches and starts to kill them. Valisa starts a relationship with doctor Griggs, but how is possible for her to love someone who hates witches and can doctor Griggs really throw away all his beliefs about witches just to stay with her?
Love, hate, faith, hope, sin...the whole Salem Village loose its mind, innocent people are killed, kids loose their mothers and men loose their lovers, Rhoslyn and Valisa have to try to build their bond of sisters. Will they be able to face the bad sides of human beings? Are witches the actual guilty? Many witches decides to start to hide, but Rhoslyn and Valisa don't want that, they want to be able to show their passion for witchcraft since they did not do any harm with the spells. Were the witches used as scapegoat from a whole population?
Kids friendly moments that go hand in hand with the moments that make adults reflect, "Witchcraft - a new musical" has another goal, to show the actual witches lives. Yes, many of the audience members can not know about Wicca women, actual women with a normal life that still exist in our society and that practice spells and believe in magic, calling themselves witches. Many of them were in the audience and all loved the show. Wiccans still has to face many prejudice because people still think they are connected to the Devil, exactly as happened many, many years ago in Salem Village. So history and modernity walk together in this amazing musical, that has everything to have a longer running, starting from the leading ladies that, at the young ages of 22 y.o. and 25 y.o., have donated to the audience a mature, strong and touching performance who touched its climax when there were the scenes of Rhoslyn and Valisa together and the bond Cherry Babes have is beyond amazing, they blew off the whole audience with their performance and with the love their shared for each other ( being sisters in real lives ), in a musical that touches also an important topic such as sharing this life with someone you love and who loves you back.
