What is Wicca and is it ok to be Christian and also follow Wiccan practices?
Heather's first paragraph describes it well. But it does not in any way blend with following Christ.
First of all, God wants us to worship Him alone, and Wicca and other new age religions teaches a oneness with nature, and a type of nature worship that is wrong.
Second, as Heather said, many of those in Wicca practice a type of witchcraft, or casting of spells. They don't believe in Satan and are not Satanists, but by following these practices they are still involved in Satan's kingdom, or the occult.
I believe there are two important questions to ask yourself. One, what is it that attracts you or others to the New Age religion or the occult of any kind? And, two, why is it wrong in God's eyes?
I think that if someone is a Christian and yet attracted to the occult, it is because they have not come to know the very present, very involved, very powerful and yes, even supernatural God. I speak from experience. I grew up in Christianity, but it was dead religion. I didn't know how to find God in a real way that actually affected my life. I felt powerless and hopeless. And what I saw in my church did not help me in any way. But I found out after much pain from going my own way and getting lost in the occult, that God is very real and powerful and loves us very much. Seek Him out and find out if I am speaking truth or not.
The other reason people get involved in the occult is because they want control, and do not want to have to submit to God or wait for Him to act. When someone casts a spell, it makes them feel powerful, like they can make things happen. But God asks us to trust Him, to submit to Him and follow His ways. It can be hard sometimes, but if we do, He will always come through and bring about wonderful things in our lives.
Last of all, why does God hate witchcraft (note that I said witchcraft, not those in witchcraft) and people going after fortunetellers, seeking astrology for direction, or any of the occult or new age religion? I believe primarily for two reasons:
1) For our sake because when we dabble in Satan's kingdom, he ends up putting us further and further into bondage. When I first got involved in the occult, I felt powerful, peaceful and happy. Satan always makes it good at first to get you hooked. But as time went on, I became more and more deceived and more and more in bondage, but the peace and happiness had gone. False peace never lasts.
2) For God's sake. How do you think it must feel for God to create us, love us, care for us, draw us to Him, long for us and then we go to His enemy or to "worldly religions" to find guidance or anything else? God is the only true source of guidance and truth and peace and joy and contentment, and if you seek Him in truth and with all your heart He will gladly give you more than you ever imagined.
So, do not deceive yourself. You cannot follow Wiccan practices and follow Jesus Christ at the same time.
